The present drawing, although listed in the Walpole Society was only previously known from the engraving in the British Museum, London. The engraving is listed as being by Lewis, but is without inscription or title. It does however bear a pencil inscription 'Mrs. Denham' on which the present identification is made.

Lawrence also executed a drawing of James Denham (1754-1816), (see Walpole Society, loc.cit.) which is dated 1815. One may presume that Mrs Denham was the wife of James Denham and as the drawing of her is dated 1789 it may have been done on the occasion of their marriage.
