Lawrence painted a group portrait in oil of Mrs John Thomson and her son Charles Edward Thomson, circa 1806, which is now at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, New Brunswick, Canada. It is possible that the current drawing may have been a study for the finished portrait. Charles Edward was later to become Baron Sydenham of Sydenham, Kent, and of Toronto, and Governor-General of British North America.
