Broadsheets (630 x 450 mm). 2 engraved plates after Christian Köck by F.L Neubauer, Hüllmann and Klauber, vignette title, vignette on final leaf. (Some pale dampstaining.) Sewn in contemporary plain pastepaper boards (a little soiled); cloth portfolio.

FIRST EDITION. "Soemmerring met William Hunter during a visit to London in 1778. The latter's classic work on the pregnant uterus dealt only with the latter half of pregnancy. Soemmerring therefore decided, in a supplementary volume, to deal with the appearance of the embryo during the first half of pregnancy. This book is one of the best illustrated of Soemmering's works" (Garrison-Morton 473). Choulant-Frank, p.307 ("this ranks among the most valuable works of Soemmerring and is even today useful and highly appreciated"); Heirs of Hippocrates 704; Waller 9045.
