FIRST EDITION. In his experiments with a wide variety of animals, Spallanzani researched the role of gastric juice, concluding that it was a basic factor in digestion and strongly antiputrefactive. He was able to obtain samples of gastric juice by feeding animals sponges attached to strings. He also discovered the action of saliva in digestion. Garrison-Morton 981; Norman 1983. (2)
