A CARVED IVORY AND WOOD GROUP OF JUPITER AND HIS EAGLE
ATTRIBUTED TO SIMON TROGER (1683-1768), FIRST HALF 18TH CENTURY
Jupiter depicted striding forward with his thunderbolt in his right hand and his eagle at his feet, on a naturalistic base; very minor restorations
This fine statuette is stylistically and morphologically related to that of Pluto in a group of the Rape of Proserpina by Troger of about 1745, in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich (inv. no. R.4999, see Berliner, loc. cit.) and of an executioner in the left foreground of The Judgement of Solomon (Victoria and Albert Museum, London, illustrated in Philippovich, Elfenbein, 1961, p. 242, pl. 178). It is also virtually identical to another statuette of Jupiter, exactly the same height, which was sold in these Rooms on 29 April, 1980, lot 172, save for the fact that that figure had an integrally carved crown and the eagle was differently positioned.
