First edition of a famous picture bible illustrated by Tobias Stimmer, with an introduction and accompanying verse by Johann Fischart. USTC 676944; VD16 F 1155.
Quarto (200 x 153mm). Title within decorative woodcut border, 170 further woodcut illustrations within borders (small marginal repair to A1, lightly washed and pressed). Late 19th-century half black morocco by Lortic Fils, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Provenance: early faded inscription on title – J. Pegner (?) (faded inscription dated 1822) – Oliver Henry Perkins (bookplate; his library sold Anderson Galleries, 23-24 March 1926) – Schweinfurt, Otto Schäfer (monogram on rear endpaper).
