Purchased in Rome, as 'School of Guido', 1839, presumably by Eliza Hunter Blair, wife of Major-General Thomas Hunter Blair, and by descent.

Lot Essay

The son of a painter, Frans Francken II is the most important and the most widely-known artist of the Francken family. Paintings by him are in a number of large public collections in Europe. He mainly produced small cabinet pictures, such as this picture, depicting religious, allegorical and historical themes.
