Lot Essay

An earlier version of the present composition is in the Stadtmuseum, Solothurn. Signed and dated 1634, the latter was once considered autograph by Mayer and Gaya Nuño, but has more recently been attributed by Felton to the circle of Ribera (see A.E. Pérez-Sánchez, L'opera completa del Ribera, Milan, 1978, p. 142, no. 443, where the figure is described as Saint Matthew).
