Lot Essay

There is a similar composition of Francis I by Mytens, dated to the 1750's, in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. Francis I was the husband of Maria Theresa Habsburg, the heir to the Emperor Charles VI, whose accession to the Habsburg estates in 1740 had triggered the War of Austrian Succession. She secured her husbands election as Emperor in succession to Charles VII; the youngest of their 16 children was Marie Antionette.
