Digby was a member of Charles I's household, he was later knighted by James I. In 1642, due to his catholic faith, he was forced into exile on the continent, and in France he wrote his two great treatises, 'The Nature of the Bodies', and 'The Immortality of Reasonable Souls'. While he was sent on some diplomatic missions for Cromwell, he did not return to England permenantly until the Restoration, where he became a founding member of the Royal Society.
