The watch features the so-called "Tixier" calibre, invented by the French watchmaker Jean Tixier who emigrated to Fleurier, Switzerland, in the mid-19th century. He designed a cut-out plate movement, often featuring centre seconds. The regulator-style dial places the emphasis on the centre seconds display as opposed to the traditional time display. Other highly unusual features are the Fahrenheit thermometer and the two time zone function as, when it was manufactured around 1860, the establishment of time zones was still in its early years.
