Lot Essay

In 1948 Raza began to experiment with pictorial form. Figures very rarely enter his picture space and instead Raza concentrated on depicting the varied textures and nuances of the cityscape, focusing on the effects of color combined with the play of light. This work is unusual as it is one of the very few works where the figure is of primary importance, rather than the 'incidental, fugitive' figures that otherwise serve to highlight the insignificance of man when compared to the majestic backdrop of nature.
