SYMONS, A.J.A. 20 autograph and 9 typed letters initialled to Desmond Flower, 1931-1935; 1940-1941. The letters contain many references to various writing and publishing projects, notably the development of The Quest for Corvo, interspersed with more and more complicated schemes for the repayment (or its postponement) of a loan: “..the inconsistency you may perhaps feel in the fact that, though I cannot pay what I owe you, I nevertheless entertain now & again in expensive restaurants. The fact is that I cannot afford even my much diminished entertaining, but that, placed as I am, I am forced sometimes into extravagance”. The letters are usefully, and unresentfully, annotated in pencil by Flower. [With:] Autograph manuscripts of editorial notes for “The Book-Collector’s Quarterly” and The First Edition Club, on the sale of York Minster’s Caxtons; an exhibition of bookbindings; discussion of the meaning of First Edition; two general plans and announcements. Altogether 35 pages, f’cap & 4°, variously deleted and rewritten; fragments on 6 further pages; and with drafts of a review of Percy Muir’s Points, 15 pages, small 4°. Half black morocco box.
