The letters contain many references to various writing and publishing projects, notably the development of The Quest for Corvo, interspersed with more and more complicated schemes for the repayment (or its postponement) of a loan: “..the inconsistency you may perhaps feel in the fact that, though I cannot pay what I owe you, I nevertheless entertain now & again in expensive restaurants. The fact is that I cannot afford even my much diminished entertaining, but that, placed as I am, I am forced sometimes into extravagance”. The letters are usefully, and unresentfully, annotated in pencil by Flower.
