The vases were presented to Lord Baden-Powell by the Boy Scouts of Holland on his seventieth birthday, 22 February 1927 and are referred to in The Baden-Powell's Scrapbook Vol. 15, 1927, held at Mercers' Hall, London.

Colenbrander trained and worked as an architect before becoming the artistic director of Rozenburg in The Hague. He was later the director of Zuidhollandsche Plateelbakkerij in Gouda and at the RAM pottery in Arnhem 1923-1928. Colenbrander won a gold medal for his Cathedral pattern vases which were exhibited at Exposition Français des Arts Décoratifs, Paris 1925. He was influenced by Middle Eastern and Asian architecture, and reportedly by Javanese batik textiles.
