Arias with gilt arms of the Duque de Almazan within gilt border, gilt spine, turn-ins and edges, green cloth slipcase (very light rubbing to extremities, slipcase with small waterstains). FIRST EDITION OF A TREATISE ON THE SPANISH TRADITION OF HORSE RIDING, a seminal work to trace the origins of tauromaquia. These equestrian exercises performed by the nobility met immense success in 17th-century Spain and some of them, called juegos de cañas y toros, later evolved into bullfighting. The spirited plates, engraved by María Eugenia de Beer, were greatly admired by Goya, who reproduced most of the subjects in his celebrated Tauromaquia series.
