A note affixed to this case reads This chest belonged to Doctor Nathaniel Gardiner of East Hampton Suffolk Co. N.Y. who was Surgeon of the First Regiment New Hampshire Continental Infantry (Capt. Cilley). It was part of his camp equipment in the war of the American Revoltion 1776.

Nathaniel Gardiner (1759-1804), son of Col. Abraham Gardiner, studied medicine in Philadelphia with Doctors Shippen and Rush and served as a surgeon in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
