This contract dates from very early on in The Rolling Stones' career. They were now performing regularly at the Ealing Jazz Club, had appeared once at the Marquee and their fan base was starting to grow. The line-up at this time consisted of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Tony Chapman on drums and Ian Stewart on piano. Dick Taylor, who played bass guitar in the early years, left the band in the month that this contract was drafted, a decision that was presumably finalised just before the date of this contract which describes them as a "5 piece".
It is interesting that Brian Jones is designated as the artist here. Brian Jones was acknowledged as the band's manager before the appointment of Andrew Oldham and Eric Easton to this role in April 1963. Often referred to as the self-appointed leader, Jones apparently elicited resentment from the other members of the band when they discovered he was paying himself an extra £5 as "leader of the band".
