The present lot is a typical example of the aristocratic portrait, for which the artist was admired by the Dutch upper class. The sitter is Christine Auguste Mayer-Leiden, who was born on 23 July 1855 in Cologne and died in 1939. She was the daughter of Franz Leiden (1820-1891), a 'Sekt'-merchant and the Dutch consul in Moscow, and a Russian Princess, Wilhelmine de Pr©ene (1837-1873). On 3 September 1879 Christine married Carl Eduard Mayer (1850-1923). They had two children, named Kurt and Martha.
It is a well-known fact within the family that Thérèse was a good friend of Christina and that she had been a frequent guest at the Villa Mayer-Leiden. The family even had a room set aside in the villa as a studio for her. It was in this studio that Thérèse made the present picture during her stay in 1903.
