Lot Essay

Thomas and William Daniell left for India in 1785, travelling via Madeira, the Cape, Java and the China coast. They spent several years in India before returning to England in 1793, travelling back via the China coast where they joined Lord Macartney's embassy. They landed in England at Spithead in September 1794.
We are grateful to Dr Maurice Shellim for suggesting that this drawing was executed on the journey to India in 1785.
