with inscription 'AEtat suee 46 Thos Crispe Esqu.r of the Custom House, London younger son of Heny Crispe. AM born at Catton Decem.r 10th 1695 He married Susan daughter of Sam.l Barwick Esq President of Barbadoes She dyed Feby 6th 1728 and left issue Susan & Ann.' (on the relining canvas presumably after the original inscription on the reverse of the original canvas)

By descent to the Bowker family of Eglands House, Honiton, Exeter, and thence by descent to the present owner.

Lot Essay

The present portrait would appear to have been painted in 1741 when the sitter was 46, according to the inscription on the relining canvas presumably after an inscription on the reverse of the original canvas.
