THREE DRESS SWORDS
18th 19th Century
The first with long slender blade of flattened hexagonal section with central fuller on each face of the forte, on one face containing the roughly incised figure of a bovine animal, the steel cruciform hilt comprising straight turned quillons, each terminating in an acorn, fluted tea-cosy shaped flat pommel, and polished wooden grip inlaid with shaped engraved steel strips; the second a brass-hilted robe-sword with single-edged blued and gilt spadroon blade and cruciform hilt with the heavy straight quillons and brass handle terminating in trefoils; the third with small-sword blade of hollow triangular section, oval silver guard and cap-pommel, and octagonal-section ivory grip, the guard with a later engraved inscription attributing the sword to Philippe de Louvilliers Poincy (1639-1660), Governor of the French Antilles
