Each a border tile of rectangular form, the blue ground painted with pronounced cintamani concentric roundels and paired lips, details painted in turquoise and in red slip, turquoise narrow stripe above and below, considerable restoration to each, mounted and framed together
overall 5¾ x 21¾in. (14.5 x 53cm.)

The decoration of the library of Ahmed I (1603-17) and the Hirka-i Saadet, in the Topkapi Saray Palace, probably inspired these three Diarbakir tiles with a repeated cintamani design of three roundels and undulating paired lips punctuated by red dots. The motif of cintamani and paired lips, sometimes called Buddha lips, of a most probable Chinese origin, is a symbol associated with good fortune and power. A further example of this design and origin was sold in these Rooms, 17 October 2003, lot 372.
