Lot Essay

The Royal warship Vasa was the most expensive and richly decorated ship of the Swedish Navy. Launched in 1628, she heeled over and sank on her maiden voyage in the harbour at Stockholm. Located, intact, on the sea bed, in 1956, she was salvaged and restored and is now one of the world's best preserved 17th century ships.
