Lot Essay

The princess is shown wearing the dress which she wore on her sixteenth birthday, 21 November 1856. The presence of this daguerreotype in the collections of the Margraves and Grand Dukes of Baden would suggest that it was given by the Queen to the family of Princess Victoria's future husband, Prince Frederick William of Prussia. His sister, Louise, married Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden in 1856.
