In keeping with Star Trek's nautical theme, set decorator John M. Dwyer put a slight raised lip around the perimeter of these tabletops, desks, and credenzas. It would seem to be a good idea. There may be no tides or waves in space, but there appears to be no shortage of subspace anomalies, ion storms, and other mysterious phenomena that threaten to knock objects off of tabletops.
