Lot Essay

For a similar Pratt ware plaque depicting Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette made by John Smith Burslem and dated 1795, see the example sold Bonhams, London, 11 May 2005, lot 63.
See also the pair illustrated in John and Griselda Lewis Pratt Ware (Woodbridge 1984), p. 132, in which the design is attributed to a pair of Wedgwood jasper ware portrait medallions modelled by William Hackwood in 1778, after a pair of terracotta examples modelled in 1774 by Jean Baptiste Nini.
