Lot Essay

As these do not appear in the sale of the Sir Leslie Joseph Collection (Sotheby's, 14th-16th May 1992) it is reasonable to presume they were a gift to Lord Forte from Sir Leslie during his tenure as Vice-Chairman of the Trusthouse Forte Group.

Forty-five pieces of the same service, removed from Burghley House, were sold at Christie's London on 13th July 1959, lot 88; forty-one of those are now on display at the National Museum of Wales.
