Lot Essay
Born in Tokyo, Uraguchi studied ceramics with Living National Treasure Miura Koheiji (b. 1932) at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. He established his own kiln in Hogacho, Tochigi Prefecture, in 1991. He has exhibited and won awards in Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibitions since 1992. In 1996 a trip to China to study the old kilns of the Southern-Song dynasty was instrumental in focusing his study of Guan ware. In 1997 he first participated in the Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition in which he won an award and in 1998 his work was purchased by the Japan Foundation from the "Great Works by Masters in Contemporary Ceramics Exhibition," Fukui Prefecture. In 2001 he moved his kiln to Hachigochi, Ibaraki Prefecture and in 2002 he received the Ibaraki Prefecture Art Festival Award of Merit. His work is widely exhibited in department store and other galleries in Japan.
