Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) was a New York lawyer who served as treasurer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1909 through 1929. He was a lender to the 1896 Fenollosa/Ketcham exhibition of Japanese prints in New York and traveled to Japan in 1898. His collection of 300 ukiyo-e prints, including ninety-six examples by Hiroshige, was acquired by the Metropolitan in 1936. Lots 11, 12 and 13 are also from the Mansfield collection.
