The front case shows a highly decorated Ottoman Empire military official, most likely a member of the Osmani Order, an honor given to military leaders for outstanding services to the state. The reverse shows a late 19th century Ottoman Empire military crest featuring red and green drapery with cannons, battle axes, and the crescent moon and star in multiple locations. One can see some of these Ottoman symbols, including the crescent moon and star, on the modern Turkish flag.
