Lot Essay
Accompanied by Vacheron Constantin duplicata of the Certificate of Origin confirming production of the present watch with pulsometre, asthmometre and tachymetre scales in 1947.
The present watch is an exceedingly rare example of a reference 4178 fitted not only with the popular pulsation scale but most notably also with a highly uncommon asthmometer graduation. The asthmometer scale indicates the number of respirations per minute and is usually calibrated for 15 respirations; the scale of the present watch however is graduated for 5 respirations. When the chronograph is stopped after the patient's 5th respiration, the number of respirations per minute is indicated on the scale.
With its rare and much sought after combination of a stainless steel case with elegant teardrop lugs and a highly unusual and charismatic dial, all confirmed by the Certificate of Origin, the present watch is one of the rarest and most desirable chronographs by Vacheron Constantin to be offered at auction in recent years.
