The painting was commissioned from Gainsborough by Garrick and was exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1766. It was later reworked by the artist for the 1769 Shakespeare Commemoration before it was presented to the Corporation of Stratford-upon-Avon for the New Town Hall. It was destroyed by fire in 1946
