2 volumes, 4o (239 x 183 mm). (Some light dampstaining.) Contemporary green morocco, gilt roll-tooled border around sides, spines elaborately gilt each with two gilt-lettered red morocco labels (minor wear to head of spine of second volume). Provenance: Bordeaux, Labottiere library (bookseller's label).

FIRST EDTION of Valin's important compilation of international maritime law. No other comparable source for the period exists. All aspects of sea commerce during peace and war are covered, including colonial trade, the slave trade, fisheries, and privateering. (The entire Code noir is included.) Most of the French royal edicts relating to the sea are digested in the work, along with much commentary on customary sea usages of France and other countries. Particularly useful is a chronological listing from 1650 to 1760 of all the edicts, declarations, ordonances, resolves of council, and regulations relating to maritime and colonial affairs used by Valin, indexed to where they appear in the text. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, no copies of this book have sold in at least thirty years. Brunet V:1054; Kress Library of Business and Economics I:6398. (2)
