95 original parts only (of 100: livraisons 2-16; 18-24; 26-83; 85-91 and 93-100), 2° (370 x 270mm). 4 volume titles, 14pp. preliminary text, explanatory text. 569 HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHED PLATES, 1 uncoloured lithographed plate, after G.Severeyns. (Occasional, generally unobtrusive, browning and old dampstaining.) Unbound as issued in original printed wrappers (wrappers to livraison 60 lacking, others somewhat soiled, occasionally torn).
RARE, FIRST EDITION, first issue (reissued in Paris in 1834 with new title Flore des serres et jardins de Paris.). Van Geel was certainly the editor and possibly the author, although Pierre Auguste Joseph Drapiez (1778-1856) is another candidate. There were probably two issues of the title: the wrappers are all titled Sertum Botanicum..., the volume titles however read Encyclographie du Regne végétal. I. Sertum Botanicum.... The publishers apparently decided towards the end of the publication of the Sertum... to produce a much larger work and make the Sertum.. merely the first part. A second part (Nissen BBI 2241) was published between 1833-1838 and it is possible that subscribers to both parts were issued with volume titles as above, where as subcribers to only the first part received volume titles reading Sertum Botanicum... The wrappers intermittently include interesting additional information about the subcribers, the contents of each livraison and announcements concerning the publication and plans for future publications.
