For Christmas 1954 Varlin travelled for a few days to Paris, before he drove onward to England to Franca Giovanoli, his future wife, on 7 January. During this time between Christmas and New Years, Varlin created our large sized painting Notre-Dame in Paris. From a letter to Franca from the artist, it follows that the picture must have developed locally: "I've been here for 3 days and have once again set myself up on the street, painted Notre-Dame once more and with luck yet another painting."
