The letter is probably written to Richard Peyton of the Birmingham Festival committee. The director of the Festival at this time was Sir Michael Costa, who was no great friend to Verdi. It sheds light on Verdi's attitude to some forms of music. He was in London to conduct three performances of the Requiem in the Albert Hall, completed three years previously. The Birmingham Festival was a major musical event, which ran usually triennially until 1912.
