VERDI, Giuseppe (1813-1901). Autograph letter signed to Achille de Lauzières, St Agata, 5 October 1891, an ingenuous letter stating that he is writing some notes in Boito's libretto taken from Shakespeare's Falstaff entirely for his own pleasure, 2 pages, octavo
Dirri quando sarà finito, ed ove, e da chi verrà rappresentato non saprei dirlo. Scrivo per mio divertimento...e passare il tempo. Non saprei, nè potrei, dirri altro. Verdi reverts to his secretiveness concerning the projects that he is working on. In fact Falstaff was performed at La Scala on 9 February 1893. One reason why Verdi is trivialising what he is doing may be that de Lauzières was a French journalist, writing mostly for Le Figaro. Although he was a friend of Verdi, he was presumably keen to find out what was going to be next after Otello.
Apparently unpublished.
