Lot Essay

Best known as a watercolourist, Langley did not regularly exhibit paintings in oils until 1892, two years before the present work was executed. The picture appears to have been unexhibited however, and the title derives from the Langley family. An Epps door is thought to be a colloquialism from Warwickshire, denoting a cottage half-door.
