FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the title-page: "Mr. Mirick from Walt Whitman Sept. '88." Whitman wrote this poem for the Commencement at Dartmouth College, 1872. Green, the printer, acknowledged 572 copies of the book in stock at the time. Much of this first edition was left in stock as a result of poor sales, a fact which partially explains the large number of presentation copies from the late 1880s. BAL 21408; Meyerson A7.1.a
