FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper: "Roscoe Conkling, with respects Walt Whitman May, 1871." Roscoe Conkling (1829-1888) served in the House of Representatives from 1859 to 1863 and 1865 to 1867, and as Senator from 1867 to 1881. As senator, he was New York's undisputed Republication leader, but resigned from his post after President Garfield made several political appointments without his consultation. J.S.
