Original light-brown half calf, orange ribbed cloth, spine gilt, edges gilt, green coated embossed endpapers, blue silk ribbon marker, binder's ticket of James Arnold (spine faded, morocco lettering-piece lacking, some staining); cloth folding case. Provenance: Alfred Webb (bookplate and inscription).
Fifth edition, second printing, second issue, with cancel title-page SIGNED BY WHITMAN. PRESENTATION COPY, ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY WHITMAN on the front free endpaper: "Alfred Webb, from his friend, the author." Webb, of Dublin, Ireland, is listed in Whitman's sales notebook on March 11, 1876, having purchased Leaves of Grass and Two Rivulets for $10 (Daybooks and Notebooks, ed. W. White, p.7). Although Whitman intended to publish 1,000 copies of this issue, only 100 copies were completed. The intercalations were intended to present the book "in its permanent form" (Correspondence, ed. E.H.
