WHITMAN, Walt. Memoranda During the War. Camden, 1875-76. 8o. Remembrance leaf, two engraved portraits of Whitman, and 1 page advertisement at end. Original plum cloth, gilt-lettered on cover, edges gilt, green coated embossed endpapers; cloth folding case.
FIRST EDITION, second (but just separate) issue, with the preliminary leaves. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WHITMAN on the "Remembrance" leaf: "[To:] Joseph C. Baldwin [From:] his friend the Author." Whitman's letters to Baldwin are noted as having been lost in Correspondence, ed. E.H. Miller. Of this scarce "Remembrance" issue, Wells and Goldsmith state that it is "impossible that more than 100 copies were issued" (most of the 1,000 sets of sheets of Memoranda were bound in the collective form of Two Rivulets, 1876). BAL 21409; Meyerson A8.1.a<->2. RARE.
