Lot Essay

Extensive research, including an enquiry to the Royal Archives held at Windsor Castle, has so far failed to identify any event on 19 February 1898 which would have required a royal salute from the Victory. GIven her role as fleet flagship however, a possible explanation may be that she was simply saluting the Queen's troops who were departing (aboard Crocodile) for the Sudan to take part in Lord Kitchener's final assault on Khartoum to avenge the death of General Gordon.
