Frost was an early protégé of William Etty (1787-1849) and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1829. He painted mythological subjects and portraits. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1836-1878 and was appointed a Royal Academician in 1870.

The drawing derives from one of the artist's sketchbooks. Frost often used himself as a model.
