Clark, [c.1845]. 16mo., pagination: 56p. + advertisement leaf, folding wood-engraved frontispiece (frontispiece laid down, frontispiece and title a little spotted, title repaired at inner and with slight tears at outer margin), red buckram, gilt spine lettering, original limp cloth covers bound in, both covers with decorative frame in blind, front cover with gilt title, gilt edges. Provenance: Phillips, London, 21 May 1998, lot 176).

FIRST EDITION OF CLARK'S RARE HANDBOOK or "diminutive brochure" as he calls it in the preface. The frontispiece is an "Explanatory Diagram of the Game of Cricket ... sketched from Lord's Ground, Marylebone, and exhibits the pavilion, the new tennis court, &c"; the three parts consist of a "History and Chronology of Cricket, Instructions for the Game, The Revised Laws". The handbook was part of Clark's Sporting Hand-Books series, the final leaf advertising his Handbook of Training for Pedestrianism and Wrestling, Handbook of British Boxing and Sporting Songs.
