Lot Essay

James Caw (op. cit., p. 35) comments that in 1862 the artist sent a group of paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy which included; The Sprained Ankle 'a schoolboy acting the part of a good Samaritan', the present work and a portrait of Colonel R.W. Fraser. Caw also notes that Homeward Bound was purchased by a friend of Erskine Nicol on his advice.
