This work is a preparatory study for Strang's Adam and Eve series, commissioned by the Wolverhampton brewer and collector Laurence W. Hodson to decorate the Library of his house, Compton Hall. This commission was one of Strang's major works and consisted of ten paintings. The pictures were highly celebrated and confirmed Strang's reputation as an artist.
