Journal of a Tour in the Levant. London: John Murray, 1820. 3 volumes, 8° (214 x 135mm). 2 folding maps and 22 engraved or aquatint plates, of which 6 are hand-coloured to include the folding views of Smyrna and Zante, with wood-engravings in the text. (Lacking half-titles, some spotting or soiled spots throughout.) 19th-century red half calf and marbled boards (rubbed and lightly worn, rear cover of vol. II detached).

FIRST EDITION and Turner’s only published work, with some rare images engraved from early Turkish drawings and costumes from Chios and Mykonos. Turner was attached to the British embassy at Constantinople for five years, and from there he travelled to Egypt, the Holy Land, Albania, Turkey, Greece and the islands.
