WISDEN, John. Cricketers’ Almanack for 1887 [-1895], edited by Charles F. Pardon and (from 1891) Sydney H. Pardon. London: John Wisden and Co., 1887-1895. 9 volumes, 8° (156 x 100mm). Photographic plate in each volume after 1888. (1889 imperfect, plate mounts spotted in 1890-1891.) Mixed bindings: 1887 in modern black half morocco, others in varieties of cloth, 1895 in light brown cloth with Wisden style lettering on spine and front cover, most original printed wrappers bound in (some wrappers mounted on guards, at times affecting borders or advertising text, front wrapper to 1888 and 1892 with old adhesive tape mark, 1889 lacking front wrapper).
Twenty-fourth to thirty-second edition, a period of sudden exponential growth in the size of the almanack. Yet the price remained a steady shilling. Charles Pardon was the first editor to have his name on the title-page. His great innovation, continued for all but the war years, came in the 1889 edition with the introduction of a mounted photographic plate. The first and second part of Alfred J. Gaston’s Bibliography of Cricket appeared in 1892 and 1894 under Sydney Pardon’s editorship.
