Yasuo Sumi graduated from Ritsumeikan University, Osaka, in 1950. His work is characterised by the use of unusual tools from daily life, including the application of paint using abacuses and vibrating motors, even an umbrella. As a result, and as in many Gutai works, Sumi’s control over the exact outcome of the work is somewhat limited however the fine lines left by the abacus, along with the larger lines from the motor, create a complex abstract composition. In this work, the paint has been applied by running an abacus and vibrating device over the paper, and also by dripping paint directly.

The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the artist on 31st May 2012, no. 311, which also notes that the work was exhibited at domestic exhibitions.
